Literacy: In the 5th year of
our partnership at #35 School, 35 tutors have served
more than 80 children in one-on-one tutoring sessions.
Ten tutors also assist in the classroom and 3 tutors run
a 6th grade reading intervention program. We log in 85
volunteer hours/ month and reach 53% of the school
population! A new partnership with the Monroe Library
has brought story hours to The Corner Place and
collaborative participation in some music classes. We
are also able to assist families with adult literacy or
GED tutoring.
Arts Academy: Our successful
spring term offered classes for ages 2 to 12 in music,
dance, and art as well as a toddler and parent class
aimed at developing cognitive, literacy, music and
socialization skills. We are in the process of long term
planning for next year’s arts classes and programs; our
goal is to offer classes on a more consistent basis.
Can you help? We need your
ideas and suggestions about future arts classes, a
possible after school arts based day care program, or
other ways we might serve the neighborhood. We also need
more Upper Monroe residents on our Steering Committee.
Please direct your thoughts and questions to Joyce Perry
at 244-3125 or at

Recycle Print Cartridges
and Cell Phones at the Corner Place
In
conjunction with Monroe County Department of
Environmental Services, the Corner Place is now a drop
site for recycling all used printer, copier, and fax
toner/ink cartridges. Help keep those toxic cartridges
out of the landfill. Rather than drive them to a big
box store, if it comes out of a printer/copier or fax it
can go into the recycling box at the Corner Place. Come
see the new Corner Place, and bring any used
cartridges. Used cells phones can also be also recycled
here. Curbside recycling is not practical for these
items, while this neighborhood site is. So vow to change
any habits of dropping these items in the trash, and
start recycling ink cartridges today! The recycling
proceeds benefit the Youth at Third Presbyterian Church.

News from the Corner Place
We have moved to new quarters – just across Shepard St.
to the 2nd floor of 969 Monroe Avenue.
During the last 3 days of March, volunteers contributed
more than 100 hours carrying things across the street,
building shelves and counters, unpacking, and setting up
the art and music rooms. Many thanks to these friends
and neighbors and to Ventrix Properties for pushing to
get our space ready. The expanded space, including 2
meeting rooms and a larger room for receptions, will
allow more flexibility for program opportunities. We
will continue to make our space available for UMNA
meetings and events.
While we await some finishing touches, we launched the
new site on April 4th with a 7 week program of Jazz
for Kids. Funded by the Arts & Cultural Council of
Greater Rochester, the program for children age 6 –
teens offers Music classes that explore the roots,
culture, and many styles of Jazz; an introduction to the
basic components of Jazz Dance; and Visual Art classes
building toward an art show at the Rochester Jazz
Festival. Classes are after school on Wednesday from 3 –
5:00 and Thursday from 4-6:00 and run through May 24th.
We are planning a May 24th free outdoor jazz
concert with some area jazz musicians and Corner Place
kids. Classes, open to all, are free to residents
of Upper Monroe and families from #35 School.
Registration continues until classes are full. To sign
up, call Thelma at 248-0887.
Story Theatre is
offered on Mondays for ages 5 to 12 and includes
"Imagination Aerobics and The Art of the Imagination
through Story Telling"; Art classes on Tuesdays, also
for ages 5 to 12, will include a "Fall Art Showcase" of
watercolor, clay, leaf rubbings and printing; Music on
Wednesdays has Musical Play for 3 & 4 year olds and
Corner Place Choristers for ages 5 to 10. Registration
is on-going until classes are full. To register, call
Thelma at 248-0887. Classes are free to residents of
Upper Monroe and families at #35 School or $18.00/class
for the 5 week term.
Attention renters!
Plans are underway, to launch a new club for women in
the Upper Monroe neighborhood. We envision a social and
support group for women which will provide hobby
classes, cultural and educational programs, family
activities, and "girls night out". Open to renters only,
there will be no fees or dues; babysitting will be
provided, and we have the long-range goal of some
employment opportunities as well. Do you want to be on
the mailing list? Would you like to be part of the
planning team to choose the activities for the coming
year? We hope to have our first large meeting sometime
in November. Interested??? Please contact Joyce Perry at
244-3125 or by email at
cornerplace@frontiernet.net
.
Tutors Needed: The
Corner Place has an immediate need for tutors at #35
School on Field Street. We serve children from grades K
- 6, and have a waiting list for kids who need help. We
provide training and materials; tutoring takes place at
the school during school hours at the convenience of the
teacher and the tutor. If you can give one hour or more
a week, please call Joyce Perry at 244-3125
Progress Report
The Corner Place, a rented site at 983 Monroe Avenue,
is a neighborhood-based ministry, jointly sponsored
by the Third Presbyterian Church (4 Meigs street) and
the New Life Presbyterian Church (243 Rosedale Street).
Vision Statement
We envision a comfortable and accessible meeting place
for people to come together in our southeast neighborhood.
We hope to draw upon the strengths of this diverse city
neighborhood, where people from all economic backgrounds
live and work together. We hope to build bridges between
city and suburbs as we make use of the skills, gifts,
and insights of church members, professionals, and neighbors.
We believe that we are changed when social problems
are translated into people stories. Through concrete
acts of hospitality, healing, and acceptance, we seek
to be faithful to Jesus' call to Love Thy Neighbor.
How can you get involved?
The success of The Corner Place depends upon small offerings
of time and talent from a large number of people from
our churches and the community. It is when we know each
other by name that social problems truly become people
stories.
A site facilitator will always be present at The Corner
Place for support and supervision. A checklist of all
the possibilities for services and support is available.
Please contact The Corner Place at 256-2720 to leave
a voice message and have your call returned, or call
the program coordinator, M. J. Pattison at 461-3653.
