Did you know that
as soon as snow starts to accumulate
on main (arterial) streets, City
crews begin salting? Special
attention is given to bridges and
hills. A typical salt run may take
four hours to complete.
When conditions
warrant, City crews also plow major
and minor arterial streets. A
typical arterial snow plow run may
take six to eight hours to complete.
Private
contractors plow 80% of the streets
in the City (the remaining 20% are
considered arterial streets and are
plowed by City crews). The
contractors are expected to plow
snow to the curb; unfortunately,
this process results in snow being
deposited in driveways.

A typical
residential roadway snow plow run
may take five to six hours to
complete, depending on the type and
amount of snow and traffic.
As a general rule,
residential streets are not salted;
but City crews do salt residential
street intersections after every
residential roadway snow plow run.
This additional service is a direct
result of customer concerns. You can
always call the Office of Customer
Satisfaction at 428-5990 to report
an unsafe street or intersection.
Keeping sidewalks
clear of snow and ice is the
responsibility of each property
owner or business tenant. The City
provides a supplemental service to
assist property owners.
All residential
sidewalks are plowed by private
contractors. Contractors use a “V”
shaped snow plow to plow both edges
of the sidewalk.

Syracuse and
Buffalo do not plow residential
sidewalks!
• Place refuse and
recycling containers on the ground
at the edge of the driveway or in a
shoveled path. DO NOT place on top
of snow banks.
• DO NOT place
containers in the street or on the
sidewalk where they may hamper
vehicular or pedestrian traffic or
snow removal activities.
• DO NOT move snow
from private property onto
sidewalks, roadways or fire
hydrants. This is a violation of the
City code.
• Keep the
sidewalks clear and safe in front of
your property as is required by City
code.
• Observe all
parking restrictions.
• Listen to local
radio or television stations to
obtain important snow plowing and
parking instructions.
• As a reminder,
the snow fall in Rochester can hide
City fire hydrants. Please keep
areas around hydrants clear in case
of emergencies.
