Snow Plowing

Did you know that as soon as snow starts to accumulate on main (arterial) streets, City crews begin salting? Special attention is given to bridges and hills. A typical salt run may take four hours to complete.

When conditions warrant, City crews also plow major and minor arterial streets. A typical arterial snow plow run may take six to eight hours to complete.

Residential Roadway Snow Plowing

Private contractors plow 80% of the streets in the City (the remaining 20% are considered arterial streets and are plowed by City crews). The contractors are expected to plow snow to the curb; unfortunately, this process results in snow being deposited in driveways.

Several factors are considered when calling a residential roadway snow plow run:

-when there are three inches of new snow on the ground;
-the weather forecast;
-type of snow;
-time of day;
-school schedule;
-alternate parking schedule.

DELIVERING EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE

A typical residential roadway snow plow run may take five to six hours to complete, depending on the type and amount of snow and traffic.

As a general rule, residential streets are not salted; but City crews do salt residential street intersections after every residential roadway snow plow run. This additional service is a direct result of customer concerns. You can always call the Office of Customer Satisfaction at 428-5990 to report an unsafe street or intersection.

DID YOU KNOW..... A single residential snow plow run cover 435 miles of street!

Sidewalk Snow Plowing

Keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice is the responsibility of each property owner or business tenant. The City provides a supplemental service to assist property owners.

All residential sidewalks are plowed by private contractors. Contractors use a “V” shaped snow plow to plow both edges of the sidewalk.

Several factors are considered when calling a sidewalk snow plow run:

-when there are four inches of new snow on the ground;
-the weather forecast;
-type of snow;
-time of day;
-school schedule.

A typical sidewalk snow plow run may take four to six hours to complete.

DID YOU KNOW.....

A single sidewalk snow plow run covers 880 miles of sidewalk.

Syracuse and Buffalo do not plow residential sidewalks!

Snow Tips

• Place refuse and recycling containers on the ground at the edge of the driveway or in a shoveled path. DO NOT place on top of snow banks.

• DO NOT place containers in the street or on the sidewalk where they may hamper vehicular or pedestrian traffic or snow removal activities.

• DO NOT move snow from private property onto sidewalks, roadways or fire hydrants. This is a violation of the City code.

• Keep the sidewalks clear and safe in front of your property as is required by City code.

• Observe all parking restrictions.

• Listen to local radio or television stations to obtain important snow plowing and parking instructions.

• As a reminder, the snow fall in Rochester can hide City fire hydrants. Please keep areas around hydrants clear in case of emergencies.

DID YOU KNOW..... Toronto receives about 53 inches of snow each season; while Rochester receives over 100 inches!
