Among the many ideas resulting from
the October design charrette were a
Belmont Corner garden and a
neighborhood “theme” based on
flowers from the historic Crosman
Seed Company (the old brick building
at the corner of Monroe and Laburnam).
As a step toward implementing these
ideas, UMNA applied for and was
granted a 2005 NeighborGood grant
from the Rochester Area Community
Foundation.
The grant provides $2000 to design
and construct a Belmont Corner
Garden at 1088 Monroe Avenue (the
northwest corner of Belmont across
from Jeremiah’s). Using city
assistance, the project will replace
the existing chain link fence with a
flower garden complete with a
“floweret” art piece created by an
area metal smith. One UMNA resident
suggested that this could be the
first flower of a larger Monroe
“florridor” or flower corridor
theme.
Neighborhood involvement is needed
to make the project a success. We
have the resources of a neighbor
master gardener and a neighbor metal
smith to help with design and
creation. Neighborhood children can
get involved in making the floweret
base with mosaic glass they collect.
Garden plantings/maintenance will be
the job of UMNA green thumbers. We
are looking for neighborhood
residents to help with all of these
efforts, so if this project appeals
to you, please contact Josh at
429-5445.
